Welcome to the new and improved MyDDride Blog! We’re excited to provide you with a wealth of intriguing and enlightening information about our world. That would be the world designated driving! You see, it’s not all about securing safe rides home for people who have consumed too much alcohol. We look forward to utilizing this blog section to fill you in on the many different ways in which our brand seeks to serve our community.
For example, we all have to see the doctor every now and again, right? But there are certain medical appointments that insist upon patients getting a ride home. Let’s discuss!
Surgeries that require general anesthesia.
In many cases, people have to “go under” in order to have a medical procedure performed. While anesthesia or deep sedation is necessary to prevent pain and discomfort, the process can have lasting effects. Anesthesia can impact your cognitive function, reflexes and decision-making. Most often, when a patient is coming out from being under, he or she feels groggy and even confused. Driving in such a condition is considered illegal.
“It is against the law to drive a car or operate machinery after a general anesthetic or sedation for 24 hours,” informs Kelowna’s Okanagan Health Surgical Centre, “Failure to comply with these instructions may result in your surgery being cancelled or postponed.”
Colonoscopies.
This common procedure screens patients for colorectal cancer. We feel it important to point out just how vital it is for people to get colonoscopies as they are literal life-savers. In fact, we’d advise you to contact your doctor to see about getting such a screening. During the procedure, polyps (a small clump of cells in the lining of the colon) detected by the surgeon can be immediately removed. This eliminates the risk of colorectal cancer.
Back to our regularly scheduled program, colonoscopies are known for leaving patients drowsy and unsteady on their feet for a few hours. The sedatives used to put patients to sleep make it so that driving after the procedure is unsafe. “Have an adult accompany you home,” insists BC Cancer, “You cannot drive until the following day.”
Eye surgeries or dilating exams.
It should go without saying that if your vision is impaired, getting behind the wheel is a definite no-no. If you have LASIK surgery, cataract removal or any other routine eye exam that requires pupil dilation, you will definitely have trouble seeing immediately after. For many hours after pupil dilation, a patient will be sensitive to light and have blurry vision. Naturally, he or she cannot drive home after an appointment.
